Keats and Schneider at Amherst

Keats and Schneider continued reading the Sanchez file. They learned that hundreds of tips continued to pour into Amherst police on the Yalem killing, and it wasn’t until January31 that two other detectives, Raymond Nitsche and Thomas Kenny, called Sanchez and asked him to come to Amherst police headquarters for an interview.

He agreed. Sanchez denied to the police that he had ever been on the Amherst path. He told them he had no objectionwhen they asked about their checking his work schedule at American Brass. And he willingly allowed Amherst to take his fingerprints.

A month later, the records showed, Detective Kenny went to American Brass and looked at Sanchez’s payroll records. On the day Yalem was killed, Sanchez was scheduled to work four hours of overtime, meaning he would not get out of work until 11:30 A.M. But the records showed he left work at 7:30 A.M., without explanation. The same records showed that on May 31, 1990, the day a thiry-two-year-old woman was raped on the same path, choked with a garrote and left unconscious, Sanchez had come to work an hour late and his pay was docked.

Detectives Nitsche and Kenny set up an interview with the human resources manager at the plant, Thomas Cervola, and gave him a list of the dates for the seven attacks attributed to the Bike Path Rapist.

Cervola reported back to them on March 4. Altemio Sanchez was not working at the time of any of the seven attacks.
